Feisty Female Friday: Alfre Woodard

The FFF this week is Alfre Woodard.

Alfre was born in OK into a family that always encouraged her to use her voice and to be proud of herself. A former high school cheerleader and track star, she got the acting bug after being persuaded to auditioned for and was cast in a school play. She went on to study acting at BU and then moved to LA. She got her first break Cross Creek and starred in Passion Fish, Primal Fear, Crooklyn, Miss Ever’s Boys, Twelve Years a Slave, State of Affairs, The Last Frontier, and Juanita. Alfre starred in roles on television in HBO films, a Netflix mini-series, and in television series.

For her work as an actress, she has won a Golden Globe, four Emmy, Audie, Crystal, and SAG awards in a career that spans over 40 years.

Alfre has also been active in the anti-apartheid movement, voter registration, LGBTQIA rights, and for working as a political activist and film producer. She is the founder of Artists for a New South Africa and was on the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Alfre was named one of the Most Beautiful People in America by People Magazine and as one of the greatest actors of the 21st century by the NYTimes.

She lives in CA with her husband and her two children. She loves yoga and fitness, watching international films, traveling, and mentoring young film writers.
