Feisty Female Friday: Robin Roberts
The FFF this week is Robin Roberts.
Robin is an American television broadcaster who co-anchors ABC's Good Morning America. She was born in AL, grew up in MS, and played many sports in college where she graduated with a degree in communications.
She began her career as a sports anchor, reporter, and radio host in MS, TN, and GA. Robin next joined ESPN as a sportscaster, then ABC News, as a featured reporter for Good Morning America, and was also a host of ABC's Wide World of Sports.
Robin was promoted to co-anchor of Good Morning America with George Stephanopoulos as her co-anchor. Under their partnership, Good Morning America was back at the top of the ratings. She also anchored a series of reports based Hurricane Katrina, twice hosted the Academy Awards preshow, guest-starred on Hannah Montana, and drove the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500.
Robin was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, was named one of ESPNW's Impact 25, served as a guest host on Jeopardy!, and hosts the Disney+ interview series. She has performed as an a cappella backup singer, started her own production company, and was the executive-producer and narrator of the documentary, Tuskegee Airmen: Legacy of Courage, of which her father was a member. Her awards include many in sports broadcasting and journalism, an Equality Forum Icons of History, and serves as a mentor for Disney's #DreamBigPrincess campaign.
Robin was diagnosed with MDS, underwent surgery and chemotherapy treatments. An 1,800 percent spike in donors occurred on the day that she went public with her illness. She had a bone marrow transplant and returned to GMA, receiving a Peabody Award, Arthur Ashe, and NBS Sager Strong Awards for how she engaged the public about her disease and recovery.
She is the author of four books and has credited her parents with cultivating the "three 'D's: Discipline, Determination, and 'De Lord'" of her life.
Robin is married and lives in NYC.
