Feisty Female Friday: Lupita Nyong’o

The FFF this week is Lupita Nyong’o.

Actress Lupita Amondi Nyong'o was born in Mexico and was raised in Kenya. She holds dual Kenyan, Mexican and American citizenship. While still a student, she served as a production assistant and an intern on several movies and graduated with a degree in film, African studies, and acting. Her senior thesis film, In My Genes, was featured at the NY African Film Festival.

Lupita had her film debut in 12 Years A Slave, winning an Oscar for her performance. She was also the lead in the miniseries, Shuga, appeared in the thriller Non-Stop, and had roles in the Star Wars-The Force Awakens, The Rise of Skywalker, The Jungle Book, Black Panther, Wakanda Forever, Eclipsed, The 355, and A Quiet Place.

In addition to being a superhero, she is also a fashion icon known for her wearing of bold colors and incorporating her Kenyan background into her fashion choices. Lupita has also won a Daytime Emmy, SAG, and a Golden Globe award, and is part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Her long battle with uterine fibroids has been instrumental in her founding of the Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research grant to seek better screening, research, and less invasive treatments in the treatment of this chronic condition allicting many women. She is an advocate for the protection of historical buildings, women’s rights, animal rights, has written a NY Times best-selling children’s book, and has been named one of Africa’s Most Powerful Women.

Lupia lives in LA and Nairobi and remains single.
